Charlie Sheen PWNs Mainstream Media on UStream, Twitter: #Winning

The Sheen on Sheen: Charlie dumps mainstream media for social media… and is #winning.

Charlie Stream Ustream2

He was fired from the hit show Two and a Half Men, but he is definitely #winning in the online social media.

Pwnd

“The @charliesheen [Twitter] account has highlighted the ability of the Twitter platform to enable individuals to build an owned audience, in real-time, in scale, with a narrative that does not need to pass through the traditional media gatekeepers,”

-Lou Kerner, Internet & social media analyst for Wedbush.

Yes he said owned.

Mystic, Worlock or Social Media Maven

Yes, Charlie Sheen is winning. There is no doubt about that. His public tirades and rants are a turn off and may even be a call for professional help. But regardless of what we think of this man’s tired raving appearances, Charlie Sheen is not missing the social media boat, and in fact, intends to own it.

I really don’t think America only knows what hit them the day after Sheen’s UStream webcast. Dubbed, Sheen’s Korner, the live broadcast showed the notorious celeb along with his posse of confidants promoting Charlie’s case, or cause, to the world; and he did it with record-breaking panache. If you don’t think he is motivating millions, keep watching the dial.

Breaking Records: Winning

After CBS fired Sheen, the star fired back. Sheen launched his social media torpedoes on Twitter and Ustream, and in #winning back his own website name. Charlie then took his case to his public. On March 6 his live broadcast peaked with over 118,000 simultaneous viewers and netted over 1.2 million viewers.

Sheen's Korner on Ustream

Did Sheen miss the boat in not setting up his own broadcast network? Has he failed to leverage his massive television audience and Twitter followers? He may yet marshal his star power to produce his own network shows. A couple unscripted shows is one thing, broadcast network programming with ready-made audience is another.

But he’s still winning.

Social Media Sponsors:  *sigh* Winning

Sheen won celebrity micro-endorsement agreements with Ad.ly, where their top celebrities earn about $10,000 per tweet, and with the backing of Internships.com, his first sponsor, reportedly paid Sheen handsomely for his social media intern search from their service. And as long as he doesn’t implode come May, there will surely be more sponsors to come.

No, Charlie Sheen hasn’t missed the boat. He’s sailing a wave of newfound social media fame.

In fact, ala Conan O’Brien, Sheen took his show on the road, and recently announced a short film role in “Warlocks.” Hardly a ladder climber. Though, how and where the film is released, how many sequels, video game rights, all have yet to be realized in Vatican Assassin Warlock style.

Eye on the Tiger: The Sheen of Sheen

Charlie Sheen appears to have that glow. That Hollywood stardom lustre that says I’m on top: “winning.”

Though whether you believe he’s got #TigerBlood or think that his social media program is #winning, keep a close eye on how this modern-day P.T. Barnum cum Hunter S. Thompson turns social media into his own Trump empire.

Or will it will be Nero?

“There are still many brands who haven’t figured out why they’re in social media. We still talk to brands that are trying to determine if they should be in social media. The data suggests the two most important subsets in social are user reviews and category blogs, rather than sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.”

- Chris Copeland, CEO, GroupM Search

Does Twitter Matter?

Twitter Badge Retweet
Network Effect

Twitter: 90 million new messages a day, 130 million searches this August, 160 million international users, and nearly three-quarters (71%) of all tweets go un-answered or without being retweeted.

That’s according to social media analysis tool maker Sysomos. The majority of all tweets are one-way “conversations” into the ether. Or are they?

Of 1.2 billion tweets posted over a two month period that Sysomos analyzed:

  • Only 6 percent of tweets garner a retweet.
  • 23 percent of tweet get an @ reply.
  • 96.9% of replies and 92.4% of retweets occur within an hour of the original post.

So it’s not you. It’s just everybody else: reading, and not retweeting your stuff.

If a Tweet Falls in the Forest…

Do tweets have value? Does tweeting have value. Does Twitter even matter?

So if 71% of all tweets go un retweeted or replied to, a lot of people are probably asking themselves right now, “what is the value of the tweet?”

One thing  I see missing in the study is data of user/followers consumptive behaviours and engagement sentiments; how are Twitter users disposing of the information itself (tweets), and what is their experience in engaging the information?

Asking users, “what are you doing with the information of those you follow?” and “how do you feel when you read a tweet?” would round out the data set to find value in: 1) how the information being used, and 2) how the act of engaging the information stream (tweets) is perceived (strictly informative, entertainment, comforting, etc). This user data may give a little more insight into the Sysomos dataset before drawing any conclusions on its relevance or importance of Twitter, tweeting, or the value of our tweets.

Monetizing Social Media Activities

Social Media Publishers Making Money

Monetizing your social media content like your tweets or fan page content is paying off.

According to a recent survey, over one-half (56%) of social media content publishers, including Twitter users and bloggers, report having monetized their social media activities.

Although the IZEA survey finding that 88.3% of social media publishers monetize social media seems somewhat high,  they also find some interesting data.

  • Twitter users earn 298% more for their blogs than non-twitter users in social media sponsorship.
  • Most common venues for sponsored social media activity:
    • Blog posts (64.3%)
    • Twitter updates (44.5%)
  • 52.3% of social content publishers have received direct material compensation for their social content.

Will Future CEOs be Social?

Mark Cuban at the Web 2.0 conference 2005.

Mark Cuban, Chairman HDnet - via Wikipedia

As younger CEOs replace older ones, news consumption habits
change and social media continues its trend towards ubiquity.

What will our companies look like tomorrow?
How will future CEOs reflect today’s younger more social culture?

The following summarizes key points of Mashable’s great post on how future CEOs will use social media.

Can Today’s CEO be Social?

What’s the big deal? This is simply another medium for me to
listen to my customers, and talk to my customers.

Bill Marriott, Chairman, CEO of Marriott Int’l, talking about blogging

The CEO Today
George Colony of Forrester Research claims there we need a new model of social participation to facilitate the demands of today’s CEOs, citing that today.

  • Most of today’s CEOs are not social.
  • None of the CEOs of Fortune Magazine’s top 100 global corporations have a social profile
  • CEOs fear the risk of litigation
  • CEOs say they don’t have the time to be on social networks

Social Media combines huge scale (tons of people talking)
with massive granularity (ability to dig deep into one response).

Facebook Blows It Again

An open letter.
Facebook blew it again. There is no disputing it.
Many, perhaps millions are upset, even distrustful of Facebook. The launch of Facebook Places put users privacy at risk. This again exhibits a repetitive practice of a seemingly careless company whose computer servers hold and serve out users personal information and identifying their locations to 3rd parties, advertisers and now potentially everyone.
Should Facebook users expect Facebook to change its behavior? Probably not. Should they expect another privacy policy change? *Sigh* To what end, even I would ask?
Users have received a privacy policy change in March of this year, 2010. And, oops, Facebook does it again with Places.
The time for a Federal Policy on computer privacy rights is now. Perhaps, in this particular instance for the federal government to step in and investigate the apparent lack of respect and blatant disregard for its citizen’s Constitutional rights to privacy. It is time for a national discussion that debates the online practices of Facebook and all other companies that use electronic communications and or computer servers to transmit, collect, store, access, manage, provide 3rd party access to, or resell the private citizen’s personal information and or data.
This is at least the fourth betrayal of privacy by Facebook of its users’ information in the past 4 years. What has to occur for there to be greater oversight or punitive measures put in place to deter a company from such practices?
This is not a post to berate Facebook.  The online social networking platform has provided both positive technological and social innovation and progress of historic proportion. Facebook ecosystem provides a previously unimaginable ability to reconnect, maintain, follow and grow relationships with past and current friends and consumers, with increasing business marketing and sales potentials.
However, Facebook users and even business and government, must press for greater accountability to protect citizens, netizens, the online users in the wake of Facebook’s latest privacy misstep. We must call on Facebook and other online companies to maintain users’ and businesses privacy rights as default privacy policy, and not as an elective check box that must be discovered to be unchecked.
